Acrobat Sketchbook Assignment

As you can see this is my sketchbook assignment called Acrobat. For acrobat, the first thing that comes to my mind is a circus. In that circus, it is full of bizarre acts and full of  odd and funny performers.

so I decided to add some crazy characters in my sketchbook assignment.

As you see above, this is my rough sketch of my acrobat. My sketchbook assignment is about Fatcake, a ring leader for an circus commanding cookie, his assistant to light the cannonball  which then launch the giant elephant up in the ceiling.This is my out lined version of acrobat. I enjoyed outlining Fatcake, because he was very easy and fun to outline, and i think he still looks good outlined or even sketched. The other character I enjoyed sketching is the Elephant on the cannonball, because he was easy too trace and it was fun after tracing it. What I disliked tracing was cookie and the border that separate the audience, because cookie turned out horrible, and I  positioned him to close to the cannonball. The border was very challenging because I didn't draw it  that long, so i had to improvise, and draw it longer, which turned out horrible.

This is the  final version  for my acrobat. The biggest challenge for me, with coloring it, is coloring the cookie, and the exit of the circus, because i colored it horribly, and it was difficult for me to shade it using a brush. What I enjoy from coloring this, is coloring fatcake, the elephant, and the ball. I enjoyed coloring the ball because it turned out well, and it was the only thing that was shaded properly for my opinion. In conclusion this isn't my best work that is colored with gimp, but I did enjoyed the challenge of it, and the other outcomes of the characters, like the Elephant, and Fatcake.

Spooky Sketchbook  Assignment

This is my second sketchbook Assignment, called Spooky. My spooky assignment was mainly inspired by a Spongebob episode called “Scaredy Pants”. In that epidsode, it shows spongebob inpersonating the “Flying Dutchmen”

As you can see above, this is the rough copy on my sketchbook.

The biggest challenge I faced on the rough copy is, drawing squidward, and espically drawing the flying dutchmen.

It was very difficult drawing squidward, because I have to make him look very scared, and in the same time I have to make him look very goofy. I made him look goofy and scared in the same time by drawing his mouth very wide, and made him lean back a little to completment his head and arms, and I added  lots of detail to his face, like wrinkles, bags, and I also draw his eyes very big with red reins in them.


The most challenging thing I encounter with, is drawing the flying dutchmen, because of his expression and size, It was very challenging to draw him. Because, I didn’t want to draw him too big or too small, and I wanted him to fit perfectly behind spongebob and patrick, without making him the first thing you’ll look at.

I wanted the main focus to be on squidward then the flying dutchmen, but over all I am happy with the final outcom of the rough copy.

This picture (Above) is the outlined verson of the characters, in colour. I outlined them using gimp, because I was use to using gimp on my other sketchbook assignment, dusty, which has a great outcome, so I decided to use it on this.Using the same and exact colour of the characters on the episode, I traced the characters with their respected outlined colour.

 For example, I outlined squidward and spongebob using the colour black, and dark red/pink and green with patrick.  For the flying dutchmen, I used multiple shades of green, from very light green, to dark green.

This is one of my favourate part, of the process on the project, which is painting the characters. I especially enjoyed painting the flying dutchmen, patrick and squidward. I enjoyed painting them, because It feels that as you finish painting them, it seems like I somehow made them came to life. And it looks even better with colour.

As you can see above in the bigger version, spongebob and squidward is the only ones who is outlined in black, they were out lined in black because squidward and spongebob were outlined in black, in the orignal episode, so I outlined in black, like the episode.

The only reason I outlined them in black is because I respected their choice in that episode, and it actualy looked better than using colour for the line, so I used it. Patrick and the Flying dutchmen was the only exception of not using color, because a black line around patrick would look terrible, and I would have to agree with the choices from the episode, he looks even  better with a  colour line like a dark pinkish reddish line then black.

I decided to out line the dutchmen in very light greenish yellow, because, it has a ghostly green effect, and it would be very useful, for  the ending process.

This is my finished version of spooky. As you can see, all of the effects were added like the black background, green fogs and clouds in the background, shadows, and green ghostly effects on the dutchmen.

The black background was not my first choice, and matter in fact, I wanted the background to be the defult background of spongebob (Which is a clear blue sky, and sand) but that was to simple and plain, and it was not scary enough, so I decided to paint it black.

Not only was it simple and it was fast to do, but it also made my complemented my artwork  and it also made it look like they were in a huge space. After the black background I added shadows on squidward, patrick and spongebob. The easyist part of shawdowing is making patrick and spongebobs one, because all I did was draw a simple figure resimbling theirs and  then shade it again using a graffiti tool to fade it.

I also used the graffiti tool on squidward, spongebob and patricks faces, to make them appear like they were in the scene. 

To make the flying dutchmens look ghostly, which is buy blending a light shade of green and yellow using the graffiti tool. After that was completed, I used several cloud and fog brushes on it, in green, to make it look very mysterous, and dangerous in the same time.

In conclusion this is a very big improvement for me, not only does it looks better than my other sketchbook dusty, which I use gimp to trace and paint it, like I did for this, but  I also outlined and painted this in a total of 2 hours, which is pretty  short, compare it to what I did with dusty, which also took me a least 4 hours (2 Hours on sat, 2 Hours sun)

In total this is my best sketchbook so far, and most likely, a big improvement.
